Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Herrera started the first three games of the series and will receive Sunday off after going 2-for-12 with three runs. Pedro Pages will work behind the plate with righty Andres Pallante.... Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swipes bag Monday
Herrera went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Astros. Herrera's two steals this year have come over his last eight games. The catcher has gone 8-for-31 (.258) in that span, but he has just two extra-base hits, one RBI and one run scored. For the season, he's batting .269 with a .691 OPS, three home runs, three doubles, 16 RBI and 15 runs scored over 150 plate appearances. While there hasn't been a lot of power in his bat, Herrera has hit well enough to maintain the starting job over Pedro Pages while Willson Contreras (forearm) remains out.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Posts three hits in win
Herrera went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Reds. Herrera went 1-for-11 over his previous three games before breaking out of the slump Tuesday. All three of his hits were singles in this contest. The catcher is up to a .276/.344/.362 slash line with three home runs, 16 RBI, 15 runs scored and one stolen base across 131 plate appearances.... Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Picks up first steal
Herrera went 0-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Cubs. Herrera is in a bit of a slump, having gone 1-for-12 with four walks and four strikeouts over his last five games. The catcher's steal Sunday was the first of his career. He's added a .262/.336/.355 slash line with three home runs, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored over 122 plate appearances this season. Herrera continues to occupy a starting role behind the dish with Pedro Pages as backup while Willson Contreras (forearm) is likely out until mid-July.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Resting for Wednesday's contest
Herrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Herrera caught three innings earlier in the day after the Cardinals resumed Tuesday's suspended game in the bottom of the sixth and emerged with a 3-1 victory, so he'll just be getting some rest in Wednesday's regularly scheduled game. Pedro Pages will get the starting nod behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: On bench Tuesday
Herrera is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Angels. Since last taking a seat Thursday, Herrera has slashed .467/.556/.467 in a four-game span. In his absence, Pedro Pages has the start at catcher and will bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Takes seat Thursday
Herrera isn't in the Cardinals' lineup for Thursday's game against the Brewers, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Herrera will get a day off Thursday after going 2-for-4 during Tuesday's game against the Mets. In his absence, Pedro Pages will pick up a start behind the plate and bat eighth.... See More ... Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Set for primary catching role
Herrera will serve as the Cardinals' designated hitter and cleanup batter in Wednesday's game against the Mets. Though he'll be included in the lineup in a non-defensive role Wednesday, Herrera is expected to serve as the Cardinals' primary backstop for the foreseeable future after Willson Contreras was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured forearm, an injury that will likely keep him out for 6-to-8 weeks. Pedro Pages was called up from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move and will start behind the plate Wednesday, but Herrera should see the bulk of the work at catcher while Contreras is on the shelf. Herrera has logged 76 plate appearances so far this season, hitting .232 with three home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers again Wednesday
Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies. Herrera got the Cardinals on the board with his second-inning homer. He's gone deep twice over the last three games and now has three homers, seven RBI and six runs scored across 34 plate appearances. As long as Willson Contreras (hand) continues to be unable to catch, Herrera is in line for a larger role behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Swats second homer
Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Monday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Phillies. Herrera has gotten an extended run of playing time while Willson Contreras (hand) remains out of the lineup. Over his last five contests, Herrera has gone 7-for-20 with two homers and four RBI. The 23-year-old gives the Cardinals another option for the designated hitter spot when the team is at full health, and he may force his way into the lineup even Contreras is healthy if he continues to hit well.... Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Homers in comeback win
Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI single and additional run scored in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Marlins. Herrera opened the scoring in the second inning with his homer, and his other hit sparked the Cardinals' five-run rally in the seventh inning. The catcher is filling in while Willson Contreras (hand) is unavailable. This was Herrera's second multi-hit effort in a row, and he's now 4-for-12 with four RBI and two runs scored over four contests this season. He's also yet to draw a walk while striking out five times, so there's still room for improvement with plate discipline.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Steps in for injured Contreras
Herrera will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Thursday's game against the Marlins. Herrera will pick up his second straight start behind the plate in Thursday's home opener. Both Herrera and top backstop Willson Contreras -- who served as the Cardinals' designated hitter -- were included in the lineup in Wednesday's loss to the Padres, but Contreras was hit by a pitch in left hand during the contest and is dealing with swelling a day later. Contreras is scheduled to undergo X-rays later Thursday as the Cardinals look to assess whether he's dealing with anything more than inflammation and soreness. For now, Contreras is being viewed as day-to-day, but Herrera could be in line for an extended run as the Cardinals' primary catcher if Contreras' injury is significant enough to force him to the injured list.... Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Returns to lineup
Herrera (shoulder) is starting at catcher and batting seventh for the Cardinals on Tuesday against the Twins in his return to Grapefruit League action, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Herrera missed a few days with a "stinger" in his left (non-throwing) shoulder but is ready to roll now. He will open the season as Willson Contreras' backup at catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Managing shoulder issue
Herrera isn't starting Sunday's spring game against the Marlins as scheduled due to shoulder pain, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 23-year-old has just 24 big-league games under his belt but is poised to share catching duties with Willson Contreras in 2024. It's unclear at this point if the injury is expected to affect Herrera's availability for Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Optioned to Triple-A
Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Herrera will head back to Memphis after he spent nearly three weeks with the major-league squad, going 8-for-23 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored over eight contests. With Andrew Knizner back as the team's backup catcher, Herrera will look to continue to impress at Triple-A in order to return to St. Louis' roster later this season.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Three hits in win
Herrera went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a hit-by-pitch in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Nationals. Herrera has done everything asked of him so far, going 6-for-12 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored over his three games while filling in for Andrew Knizner (groin) on the 26-man roster. Herrera's playing time has been limited with Willson Contreras occupying a starting role, but John Denton of MLB.com reports manager Oliver Marmol is considering keeping three catchers around once Knizner is activated from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Called up Wednesday
Herrera was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. Herrera will return to the big leagues after he was optioned to Memphis ahead of the 2023 campaign. The catcher has produced a .308 average with eight homers, 44 RBI, 39 runs and seven stolen bases over 185 at-bats in 50 games in Triple-A this year. Herrera will now operate as the primary reserve option behind Willson Contreras after Andrew Knizner (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Withdraws from WBC
Herrera will remain in camp with the Cardinals instead of playing for Panama at the World Baseball Classic, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Herrera withdrew from the WBC on Saturday, and he'll now turn his focus on competing for the backup catcher spot behind Willson Contreras. Herrera went 2-for-18 with one RBI, two walks and eight strikeouts across 22 plate appearances in the majors last season. He also hit .274/.381/.402 with six home runs, six stolen bases and 34 RBI in 65 games with Triple-A Memphis. Andrew Knizner is more likely to open the season as the Cardinals' backup catcher, but Herrera will try to force the issue with a strong spring.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Sent down Monday
Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Herrera was called up Saturday to provide depth behind the dish, but he didn't appear in either of the last two games. While he'll remain on the taxi squad, the 22-year-old will lose his spot on the active roster after Yadier Molina (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Ivan Herrera: Heads back to minors
Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The 22-year-old joined the Cardinals for the two-game series against the Blue Jays this week and will now return to Triple-A. Herrera didn't appear in either contest for St. Louis and is unlikely to be a factor in the majors the rest of the year. He has a .295/.385/.432 slash line with three home runs and 21 RBI in 37 games for Memphis this season.... See More ... See Less
